A grab handle used to come down to style and grip preference. That changed with the 2024 model year, when Jeep added side-curtain airbags to the roll bar.

Why Best Grab Handles for Jeep Wrangler JL Depends on Your Roll Bar

Every Jeep Wrangler JL from 2018 through 2023 has an open, exposed roll bar. Wrap-around and strap-style grab handles loop directly around the tubing, simple, universal, and safe.

Starting with the 2024 model year, Jeep integrated side-curtain airbags into the roll bar structure. Jeep Wrangler side curtain airbag grab handles are a different animal than what came before. A handle that wraps fully around the bar sits directly over that airbag housing.

The handles built for 2018–2023 use a full strap that goes around the roll bar. The 2024+ handles listed here use a bracket or bolt-on hardware that repurposes existing roll bar trim screws or Sky One-Touch track hardware, clearing the airbag entirely.

This is a safety-relevant fitment split, not a cosmetic one. It’s the reason a single grab handle recommendation doesn’t work across the whole JL platform, and why checking your model year before ordering matters more here than in most other categories.

2018–2023 JL: The Established Options

If you own a 2018–2023 JL, the Jeep grab handles JL market hasn’t changed. The GPCA GP-Grip PRO is one of the best Jeep JL grab handles for this generation: an aluminum handle that straps around the roll bar, correct diameter, straightforward install.

Bartact Paracord Grab Handles, one of the established Jeep wrap-around grab handles, is the alternative for owners who prefer a soft-grip, made-in-USA option, built for the standard pre-2024 roll bar.

Mopar’s OEM grab handles use a steel hook design and remain a factory-match option.

NXTGEN Cross Terrain also now makes a 2018–2023 version of their magnetic stow-away handle, one of the few options built for both generations, covered in more detail in the 2024+ section below.

2024+ JL: Airbag-Safe Options Only

2024 Jeep Wrangler grab handles are a narrower, more specific market than the 2018–2023 lineup. A few real airbag-safe options exist as of this writing.

The GPCA GP-Grip Air is one of the more airbag-safe options for the roll bar, built specifically around the new geometry, but it isn’t one of the compatible Sky One-Touch grab handles. It also requires a Torx tool to install, not a tool-free strap like the older GP Grip PRO. If your Jeep has this roof, GPCA recommends their GP Back Grip PRO instead, which mounts to the headrest rather than the roll bar.

Mopar’s redesigned grab handles drop the steel hook entirely. One owner reported the front handle installs by removing the freedom panels first, no dealer visit needed.

Two different versions of the Mopar rear handle exist and get confused with each other. An older version does not fit 2024+ models or Sky One-Touch, and has been replaced by a redesigned handle. The current design is confirmed by Mopar’s own parts stores to fit both hardtop and Sky One-Touch. Confirm you’re ordering the current design, not an older listing, when ordering.

Bartact Bolt-On Paracord Grab Handles are also airbag-safe and are built to use the existing Sky One-Touch top holes, making them compatible with that roof option as well. A handful of owners report the handles run long, so check the listed dimensions against your preference before ordering.

NXTGEN Cross Terrain uses a patented magnetic stow-away system with 6mm carbon steel brackets and 7075 aircraft-grade aluminum internals. It’s airbag-safe and works with Sky One-Touch tops. A 2019–2023 version is now available as well, so this is an option that spans the full JL lineup.

The 4-Door JLU Rear Seat Twist

Grab handles for Jeep JLU owners need the same scrutiny as the fronts: the rear roll bar positions also have side-curtain airbags, not just the front. Any rear grab handle for a JLU needs the same airbag-safe design as the front. GPCA sells the GP Grip Air as either a 2-pack (front only) or a 4-pack (front and rear) for exactly this reason.

The DIY Paracord Option

Some owners skip branded paracord grab handles Jeep Wrangler owners can buy and tie their own directly to the roll bar. It’s inexpensive, doesn’t scratch the bar, and can be adjusted easily.

On a 2018–2023 JL, this works fine. On a 2024+ JL, a wrap-around paracord tie covers the airbag the same way a manufactured wrap-around handle does. The DIY approach carries the same layout limitation as commercial strap versions on 2024+ models.

Jeep Wrangler soft top grab handles add one more wrinkle regardless of DIY or bolt-on: confirm the roof hardware for your manual soft top doesn’t already occupy the mounting points a handle needs.
